Things to do in Okinawa
Okinawa was the independent Ryukyu Kingdom until the 19th century and the culture, food and architecture are still noticeably its own rather than mainland Japanese. Shuri Castle's main hall burned in 2019 and is being rebuilt; the site is open and the reconstruction is visible. The aquarium in the north is a two-hour trip from Naha and worth the day.
