The Tottori Sand Dunes are not a desert — they are coastal dunes about 16 kilometres long, formed by sand carried down from the mountains and pushed back by the sea. Walking up the main ridge takes more effort than it looks and the view from the top is of the Sea of Japan with nothing in between.
